About CT Pottery Art

I create ceramic vessels that explore the intersection of natural patterns, mathematical beauty, and functional form. Working from my studio in South Knoxville, I develop pieces that translate fluid dynamics, organic structures, and geometric sequences into tactile, usable art.

My work combines wheel-thrown foundations with extensive hand-modification techniques, particularly double-wall pierced construction that allows me to create intricate surface patterns while maintaining structural integrity. Each piece begins with careful observation of natural phenomena—the way foam structures tessellate, how Fibonacci spirals emerge in growth patterns, or the elegant instability of fluid dynamics.

Technique & Process

I begin most pieces on the wheel, then extensively modify them through carving, piercing, and altering techniques that favor the control and precision needed for complex surface work. Recent projects have explored translating Rayleigh-Taylor fluid instability patterns into decorative pottery through helical carving techniques, and developing fermentation crocks that combine traditional utility with contemporary aesthetic sensibility.

My glaze work focuses on experimental formulations, incorporating materials like diatomaceous earth to create surfaces that develop their own natural instability patterns during firing. I'm drawn to glazes that have a conversation with the kiln, where the final surface is a collaboration between intention and controlled chance.

Philosophy

I believe functional pottery should engage the mind as well as the hand. Whether it's a vase displaying helical mathematical patterns or a crock designed for fermentation, each piece invites closer inspection—rewarding the viewer who takes time to trace the carved lines, explore the surface variations, or discover the underlying geometric logic.

My ceramic practice is informed by a deep appreciation for pattern, structure, and the elegant solutions found in natural systems. This same attention to detail carries through to my pen and ink illustrations of Voronoi tessellations, foam structures, and spiral sequences—two-dimensional explorations of the same themes I work with in clay.

Current Work

I'm currently developing a body of work that translates complex natural and mathematical patterns into functional vessels, pushing the boundaries of traditional pottery forms while maintaining their essential utility. This includes sophisticated vase concepts featuring advanced carving techniques and fermentation vessels that honor historical function within contemporary design.
